Dr. Block completed his undergraduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, earning a BA in Chemistry; attended medical school at the University of Kentucky; and completed a pediatric residency at Wake Forest Medical School in 1982. Dr. Block is board-certified in Pediatrics (1984) and has been recertified twice by the American Board of Pediatrics. Dr. Block was co-founder of the newly expanded Physicians to Children and Adolescents in 1982.  

For decades, he has served on the editorial boards of the prestigious Pediatric Annals, the Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal,  Infectious Diseases in Children, and others.

Dr. Block is a nationally renowned, key opinion leader and speaker on antibiotics, vaccines, and outpatient pediatric issues. He has spoken at over 50 academic and community "Grand Rounds" across the USA, including Boston Children's and Ohio State. He has served on numerous executive committees for the American Academy of Pediatrics and on a multitude of pharmaceutical advisory boards. He is a crowd favorite due to his low-key humor and clear explanations. 

He has been published as first or co-author of over 170 peer-reviewed articles on diverse pediatric topics and vaccines. He has peer-reviewed countless submitted articles to major pediatric journals.

He has been a recipient of several national and state awards for his writing and research, including the University of Kentucky "Distinguished Alumni Award" (2004) and the 1998 American Academy of Pediatrics Practitioner Researcher of the Year. He was voted locally as Nelson County's best pediatrician for 8 consecutive years. 

In 2025, Dr. Block finished his complete memoir book, "Pediatrics Around the Block, "  The life journey of a simple country doc. His other comprehensive book is the "Diagnosis and Management of Acute Otitis Media," in its 3rd edition. 

He was executive director and president of Kentucky Pediatric/ Adult Research for over 30 years until retirement in 2023. Dr. Block, for over 40 years, has worked as a full-time general pediatrician and has resided in Bardstown, where he has successfully raised 4 daughters and helps with their 9 grandchildren.
